Eco-Schools USA

Eco-Schools USA is one of my favorite environmental educational organizations. They encourage and support students to make a hands-on difference. A student led coalition is required to complete pathways that lead to the ultimate reward of the Eco-Schools Green Flag award. The pathways include; biodiversity, climate change, consumption & waste, energy, healthy living, healthy schools, school grounds, sustainable food, transportation, and water. Phew!! One pathway must be achieved for the Bronze, two for the Silver and three for the Green Flag – although, the energy pathway is mandatory for the Green Flag award. A great component of the pathways is that many of them overlap (energy/climate change or healthy living/sustainable food), so progress in one area encourages progress in another. The program requires a designated teacher advisor, integration of environmental education and practices into existing curriculum, and involvement of the entire school and larger community.

Encouraging students to practice environmentally sensitive behavior once a year on Earth Day isn’t a solution for long term, sustainable consciousness.

If there isn’t a deeper understanding as to the whys, wherefores, rewards and benefits of championing our environment – the recycling, composting, energy conservation… becomes a momentary blip on the average student’s already overcrowded desktop screen.
